Why Fortification?
According to DGHS Ministry of Health and Family Welfare out of 312 districts surveyed 254 districts are IDD endemic where the prevalence is more than 10%
About 200 million people are at risk of IDD
IDD affects the people of all ages both sexes and different socio-economic status
More than 50% of our population are affected by IDA in India Loss of National energy, productivity and growth
Annual mental impairment due to IDA is 6.6 million Annual maternal death by severe anemia is 30,000
Direct consumption by the beneficiaries through Midday Noon meal Schemes
No chances of diversion or non-use

Cost per tonne is between Rs. 2500-3000

TNSC’S DOUBLE FORTIFIED SALT
Introduced DFS in 1998 with NIN Technology using Refined Free Flow Salt.
Distributed DFS for the benefit of one million school going children in Tamil Nadu.MI’s DFS Technology will facilitate TNSC to produce DFS even with dry unrefined iodized crystal salt.
DFS will benefit more than 3.6 million school going children in Tamilnadu immediately.
DFS envisages the scope to reach more than 20 million poor rural population including children in the entire southern states of India.
STRATEGIES FOR USI IN COLLABORATION WITH SMALL SCALE SALT SECTOR
TNSC has tied up with the following Salt
Workers Societies in Tamil Nadu for the
promotion of Iodized Salt
1.Arumuganeri 600 Tonnes/month
2.Vedaranyam 400 Tonnes/month
3.Marakanam 150 Tonnes/month
Currently around 1000 Tonnes of Iodized Salt per
month is being distributed from the Societies to
the PDS
PROMOTION OF IODIZED SALT SALES BY TIEING UP WITH REFINERIES
TNSC is distributing RFFIDS to the Southern States at an affordable cost through PDS at the rate of 3000 tonnes per month
TNSC’s FUTURE PLANS
To augment Iodized Salt production from 60,000 tonnes
to 1 lakh tonnes (.1 million)
To increase the consumption level of Iodized Salt by 2007 in

TNSC'S ACHIEVEMENTS
First introduced Iron Fortified Salt (IFS) in the country during 1991
Six million school going children are benefited through Noon Meal Program by using iodized salt
Quality Iodized Crystal Salt distributed at Rs. 2.50/kg through PDS for rural population in Tamil
Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
Created awareness on the concept of Iodized Salt through “Human Chain and Mass Rally” by the school going children with UNICEF support
Conducted sensitization campaign to all PDS Salesmen to create awareness on Iodized Salt among the BPL people with UNICEF support.
Increased the distribution level of Iodized Salt by TEN FOLDS through PDS from 4200 MT (during 2000) to 42,829 MT (during 2005).
